Grand Canyon National Park staff, saying there's a need for enhanced communications at the park, want to boost cellular and Internet services.
According to a park release, "(T)hese services are currently insufficient to meet the needs of visitors, the NPS, and park partners. Action is needed at this time to address these deficiencies and develop guidance for types and locations of telecommunications infrastructure within the park that minimizes impacts to natural and cultural resources and visitor experiences."
Under a plan the park is now seeking public comment on, up to five additional telecommunications towers will be installed within developed areas on the North and South Rims, small-cell nodes will be installed in high visitor use areas, and fiber optic communications cable will be installed along existing corridors.
Public comments on the proposed action will be accepted until midnight, Aug. 11. Additional information can be found on this website.
There also will be a public scoping open house on Tuesday, July 30, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Shrine of the Ages Auditorium 20 S. Entrance Road Grand Canyon, AZ 86023.
A virtual open house webinar is also scheduled for Tuesday, August 6, from noon to 1 p.m. For additional information on the webinar, visit this page.
Comments
I support the addition of infrastructure to support wireless connections in already-developed areas of the North and South rims. I would be opposed to any actions that would impact undeveloped "wild" areas.
