Nearly $10 Million To Be Spent Cleaning Up Oil And Gas Sites At New River Gorge

Nearly $10 million is being spent at New River Gorge National Park and Preserve and Gauley River National Recreation Area in West Virginia to restore areas impacted years ago by oil and gas well sites that have since been abandoned. Overall, bureaus within the Departments of the Interior and Agriculture will address 277 high-priority wells that pose threats to human health and safety, the climate, wildlife and natural resources.

"Hellbenders," massive salamanders that can reach 2 feet in length, have not had it easy in recent decades. Back in 2011 the Ozark hellbender, which have been found in Ozark National Scenic Riverways, was designated an endangered species. And now conservation groups want the Eastern hellbender protected by the Endangered Species Act as well.

New River Gorge Now A National Park And Preserve

A crooked and rugged stretch of Appalachia, with a long-honored “national river” at its center that flows unusually from south to north, the New River Gorge will henceforth be known as a "national park and preserve." The rebranding clearly is a nod to national park economics, though that's not to say the New River isn't worthy of its new status.

One of the changes President Trump made possible before he left office was the renaming of New River Gorge National River in West Virginia to New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, and the expansion of Saguaro National Park in Arizona by about 1,200 acres. Both those changes were called for in the Consolidated Appropriations Act for Fiscal 2021 that Congress passed in late December and which was signed into law by Trump.
