Crater Lake Partners With ‘Sister Park’ In China

Crater Lake National Park saw its most visitors in a quarter-century last year, but that mark might not last long thanks to a partnership that spans the Pacific Ocean. In a nod to increasing tourism from the world’s most-populous country, representatives from Crater Lake traveled to China last week to establish a “sister park” relationship with Wuyishan National Scenic Area.

UPDATED: Forest Service Rejects Permit Request That Could Have Led To Development Near Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon National Park Superintendent David Uberuaga on Friday praised a decision by the U.S. Forest Service to deny a permit for a development that could have placed more than 2,000 housing units roughly a mile from the park's South Rim.

UPDATED: USFWS Proposes To Remove Yellowstone, Grand Teton Grizzly Bears From Endangered Species Act Protection

Stating that the grizzly bear population in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem has recovered to the point of sustainability, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing to remove the species from the Federal Lists of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife.

Three decades ago there was talk that the only discussion of mining for gold at Kantishna in Denali National Park and Preserve would be done in the vein of interpretation, but now an Alaskan man is seeking permission to develop his placer claims in an operation that seems daunting but holds the potential for a large payday if U.S. Geological Survey estimates are accurate.

Fire Island National Seashore Superintendent Chris Soller announced today the Public Scoping Comment Summary Report for the Wilderness Breach Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement (Plan/EIS) is available on the National Park Service (NPS) Planning, Environment, and Public Comment website. The report summarizes public input received during the 2015 scoping period and will help shape the Draft Plan/EIS.
