The menacing flag that the pirates flew
Struck fear in the hearts of a merchantman’s crew.

Good Morning.

I belive the answer is: Buck Island Reef National Monument Virgin Islands.

Sorry, Ken; it's not Buck Island Reef National Monument. You'll want to confine your search to the mainland.

You've nailed it, Connier; welcome to the Winners Circle. Judging from early returns, I suspect you'll have plenty of elbow room.

Lee Dalton and celbert have figured this one out. Why am I not surprised?

Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial?

Jean Lafitte National Historic Park and Preserve?

Your whiteboard punishment made me laugh outloud. Sneakery? Amongst Traveler followers? Impossible.

Not Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial or Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, but those are two very imaginative guesses.

Dunno about you, Bob, but I'm surprised. Your twisted, convoluted, highly imaginative and very clever clues usually leave me completely bewildered. But then, bewilderment is my normal state.

Virgin Islands National Park?

or Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument? (which is adminstered by the National Park...)

Not Virgin Islands National Park. This Mystery Spot has a mainland location.

Jane, I’m afraid that you are sadly mistaken. Recently, some clever snoopery by one of our interns revealed that two of our readers – one male and one female -- will stoop to sneakery at the slightest provocation. With these two miscreants in mind, the Quizmeister builds Google resistance into each brain-teaser that he posts.

Is it Salem Maritime National Historic Site

Nice goin', Dakota Toni. Always a pleasure to welcome a newbie to the Winners Circle.

Sorry, Ken; it's not Salem Maritime National Historic Site.

I'm the opposite, Lee. It's the photographic puzzles that perplex me the most. I actually have a chance with the verbal clues. This time, like many times, one of the clues was the key, and the rest followed along after I realized the significance of it.

Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grove on the Potomac National Memorial?

Not sure how this fits most of the clues, but it certainly is a stab at using the bonus clue since it is very small and has quite a long name.

Sorry, viewmtn, it's not Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grove on the Potomac.

Fort Jefferson on Garden Key in Dry Tortugas National Park

Not Fort Jefferson on Garden Key in Dry Tortugas National Park. This mystery spot is on the U.S. mainland.

President William Jefferson Clinton Birthplace Home National Historic Site in Hope, Arkansas

Sorry, Caprice; it's not President William Jefferson Clinton Birthplace Home National Historic Site. That's way cold.

Homestead National Monument of America

That one's way cold too, Renfrew.

San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park

You are headed in the wrong direction, Renfrew.

Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine

You've moved to the correct half of the continent, Renfrew, but Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine is not what we are looking for.

Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County Battlefields Memorial National Military Park

Does an island in a river count as the mainland?

A completely different guess: Saint Croix Island International Historic Site

Not Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County Battlefields Memorial National Military Park, and not Saint Croix Island International Historic Site. The mystery spot is not located on an island.

'Way to go, Caprice! Welcome back to the Winners Circle.

Thaddeus Kisciuszko National Memorial

Sorry, it's not Thaddeus Kisciuszko National Memorial.

Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts

Nice going, viewmtn, and welcome to the Winners Circle. Sorry 'bout your captcha travails.

Not Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts.

Is it New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park

Sorry, Ken, but it's not New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park.

Hi Bob,

This is a wild guess...I recall hearing or reading that Blackbeard lived and died on Ocracoke Island. Is it Cape Hatteras National Seashore?

Renee

Yes, the pirate Blackbeard (Edward Teach) was killed aboard his ship Adventure in a ferocious battle near Ocracoke Island. But no, the mystery spot is not Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

How about Jolley gulch, Zion National park?

No, ed-123, it's definitely not in Utah.

Congrats, ed-123, though the professor probably will dock you a chocolate for your misspelling...;-)

You're in, ed-123, but you have to use the servants entrance. Check your spelling.

It's a pleasure to welcome David Crowl to the Winners Circle. David, after you present your Gold Star Pass to the concierge, please find ed-123 and tell him he stuck a "d" in there where it doesn't belong.

Eric has sniffed out the answer. Well done!

Winners Circle accomodations for ron erpelding, but servants entrance will have to do. It's not a "National Monument Park," Ron. ;o)

Quizmeister,

How about George Rogers Clark National Historic Park.

Sorry, Eric; it's not George Rogers Clark National Historical Park.
