Gros Morne National Parks Celebrates 50th Anniversary

It will be free to enter Gros Morne National Park this weekend to mark the Newfoundland park and UNESCO World Heritage Site’s 50th anniversary.

On Aug. 12 from 2 to 5 p.m., Parks Canada, in collaboration with the Gros Morne Co-operating Association and area communities, will host Picnic in the Park events at the Shallow Bay Day Use Area, Trout River Pond Day Use Area and Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse. Enjoy live music, airbrush tattoos, nature walks, games and prizes. Special guest Parka (the Parks Canada mascot) will make an appearance, local artists will host activities, and a professional chef will be at each of the picnic locations.

These events are being coordinated and supported by Parks Canada staff and area volunteers, including local fire departments and Bonne Bay Search and Rescue.

Then on Aug. 13 from 2 to 4 p.m., Parks Canada is hosting an official ceremony for Gros Morne’s 50th anniversary at the Discovery Centre near Woody Point. Dignitaries will include former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien who signed the 1973 agreement to establish the park. Local communities will sign an agreement related to a regional approach to tourism for the benefit of communities in the region. There will also be performances by the Miawpukek Youth Drum Group, and music by local performers Mike and Lou Macdonald and Sean Payne and Bill Coates.
