Limited lodging in cabins, such as this cabin at Old Faithful, will return to Yellowstone National Park beginning Monday/Kurt Repanshek file

Limited lodging is scheduled to return to Yellowstone National Park on Monday, with the possibility of more rooms becoming available later this summer.

For now, cabins with private baths will be available at Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel on Monday, with more cabins expected to come on line at the Old Faithful Lodge and Old Faithful Snow Lodge on June 8, at Lake Yellowstone Hotel and Lake Lodge on June 17, and at Canyon Lodge on June 19.

For now, the Old Faithful Inn, Grant Village, or Roosevelt Lodge "may reopen in 2020 if conditions allow," a release from Xanterra Travel Collection said.

Concessions in national parks have been turned upside down by the coronavirus pandemic, with problems revolving around when lodges, restaurants, and other commercial businesses in the parks could open this year as well as how concessionaire employees would be housed without risking an outbreak of Covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

The closure of parks has caused significant losses to concessionaires. A survey of concessionaires indicated that as whole they'd experience a 46 percent drop in revenues if the parks didn't reopen by June, and a 58 percent drop if the parks didn't reopen before July. Additionally, 90 percent of those surveyed said they were having difficulty "making loan payments or accessing capital."

The data was collected by the National Park Hospitality Association, which did not put the percentage loss of revenue into dollars.

Xanterra is one of the largest park concessionaires, with lodging operations in Yellowstone, Glacier, Zion, and Grand Canyon national parks. Earlier this spring the company said it planned to open some lodging in those parks by June 15.

In announcing the return of limited lodging to Yellowstone, the concessionaire said "(T)he decision to re-open was made after closely monitoring the guidance and recommendations of public health agencies such as the Center for Disease Control and World Health Organization, as well as federal, state and local governments."

Along with the opening some cabins for visitors, Xanterra also said it would open the Madison Campground on June 15, Bridge Bay and Grant Village campgrounds on June 17, and Canyon Campground n June 19. The Fishing Bridge RV Park was to remain closed through fall of 2021, the company said without explanation.

Yellowstone National Park's website indicated that the campgrounds the park staff manages -- Indian Creek, Lewis Lake, Mammoth, Norris, Pebble Creek, and Slough Creek -- would all reopen July 1 on a first-come, first-served basis. Tower Fall Campground would remain closed this year, according to the website.

While dining rooms in Yellowstone would not be available at this time, takeout options are to be available at:

Mammoth Hot Springs Area

  • Terrace Grill (June 1-Oct. 12), take out only food and beverages including beer and wine
  • Old Faithful Area
  • Geyser Grill at Snow Lodge (May 22-Oct. 25), take out only food and beverages including beer and wine
  • Old Faithful Lodge Bake Shop (June 8-Oct. 4), take out only light meals, snacks and non-alcoholic beverages
  • Old Faithful Lodge Cafeteria (June 8-Oct. 3), take out only food and beverages including beer and wine
  • Canyon Area
  • The Eatery at Canyon Lodge (June 19-Oct. 12), take out only food and beverages including beer and wine
  • Yellowstone Lake Area
  • Wiley’s Canteen at Lake Lodge (June 17-Oct. 4), take out only food and non-alcoholic beverages
  • Lake Lodge Lobby Bar (June 17-Oct. 3), take out only beverages including beer, wine, and cocktails
  • Grant Village Area
  • Grant Village Dining Room (June 17-Sept. 13), take out only food and beverages including beer and wine

How soon lodging would be available in other parks remains to be seen. At Grand Teton National Park, the Grand Teton Lodge Co. said in late April that neither the Jackson Lake Lodge or Jenny Lake Lodge are likely to open this year because of housing issues for its workers.

However, the company did say that it expected to be able this summer to open cabins, camping, and tent cabins at Colter Bay Village, Jenny Lake Campground, Gros Ventre Campground, and Headwaters at Flagg Ranch.

Crater Lake, Glacier, Mount Rainier, and Yosemite national park officials have yet to say when they might reopen their parks.
