Washita Battlefield National Historic Site Featuring Stories Of The Elders

Washita Battlefield National Historic Site in Oklahoma will be featuring programs tied to Stories of the Elders during the month of February.

Park staff are inviting students, parents, and the community to the annual Stories of the Elders program during the month of the Snow Moon, February. Presentations are scheduled on Thursdays on for February 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th from 3:30 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the park visitor center.

On February 5th, Emma Lou Standing Water Brewer will open the series with the story of how she came to receive a magnificent buckskin dress as a "coming out gift." This dress was made for her by Cheyenne master artist and beader, Anna Otterbye Hawk. Emma will bring the dress for all to see.

Barbara Starr Sage and her daughters, Starrla and Kyla, will share their heritage and stories on February 12th. Starrla and Kyla will wear their full regalia as they perform the Jingle Dance.

On February 19th, Washita National Wildlife Refuge Park Ranger, Caroline Cometsevah Rhodes, will be the storyteller and on February 26th, Roman Nose Park Guide Minoma Littlehawk Sills will be the featured speaker.

You are invited to visit the park, which is located near Cheyenne, Oklahoma, and welcome these storytellers as they share the rich culture and traditions of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes.
