Zabriskie Point At Death Valley National Park Closing For Repairs

Share

Zabriskie Point, an incredibly scenic overlook in Death Valley National Park, will be closed to the public from December 1 through the end of next April so crews can make significant repairs to improve visitor safety.

Among the work to be done are repairs to unstable support walls. Currently, the walls are deteriorating to the extent that they pose a danger to public safety. Construction at Zabriskie Point will not effect California Hwy 190 which will remain open to through traffic.

Earlier this fall park officials had said the area would close on October 1 and reopen April 1, but delays pushed those dates back a bit.

The Zabriskie Point vista was built by the Pacific Coast Borax Company in the 1920s and named after the company's vice president and general manager, Christian Zabriskie. The site was originally intended as a way-stop for visitors in automobiles to see Manly Beacon, the prominent landmark in Death Valley's "Badlands." It remains one of the most popular areas within the Park.

While Zabriskie Point is closed, other venues in the area to visit that offer exceptional views are: Golden Canyon, Artists Drive, or Dantes View.
