Traveler's Gear Box: ProBar Bite

The ProBar Bite fits nicely in your pocket or pack

These days, most everyone has some sort of people-fuel in their pack, right alongside the flashlight and extra layer. Maybe you won't need it, but if you're on an untried route, a loop that becomes a there-and-back, or you're just plain cold, you'll be glad it's there. These high-protein foods will keep your mind on your feet, and off of your stomach.

ProBar, based in the mountains of the West, has a wide selection of high-protein, energy bars and meals, to take with you into the outdoors. And now, there's one more: the Bite. Billed as the "anytime" snack, it packs 190 calories, 11 grams of sugar, and 6 grams of protein into a small package. You won't need that chemistry doctorate to decipher the ingredients, plus it's gluten-free, non-GMO, dairy and soy free, certified organic, and kosher to boot. That should about cover it.

Probar Bite is a quick on-the-go snack.

During a recent Wasatch hike (sub-zero and high winds) it pepped me up, and my partners, who chose from these six flavors: peanut butter crunch, peanut butter chocolate chip, mixed berry, coconut almond, chocolate cherry cashew, and superfruit + greens.

My ten-year-old son raved about the mixed berry, and I agreed with him, but they're all pretty darn tasty. They're not just overgrown granola bars, either, but are packed with nuts and seeds, raisins and fiber, among other things. They'll get you where you're going, and back again. At a couple of bucks a piece, I'll have a few Bites in the bottom of my pack from now on; they've made me a fan.
