Floating Through The Gates Of Lodore In Dinosaur National Monument

Share
Alternate Text

Western rivers are the lifeblood of the landscape, threading through canyons and sweeping past the plains.

The Green River is one such river, born high in the Wind River Range of Wyoming and flowing steadily down to its confluence with the Colorado River in Canyonlands National Park. In Dinosaur National Monument, the Green has cut through the Uinta Mountains, creating the Gates of Lodore.

This short video captures a trip on the river as it flows through the monument.

Hey, that's me in the back of the raft at the 1:40-1:50 mark!  Had a great time for 4 days and 3 nights.  At the campground shown at the end, we saw a young bighorn ram across the river about 100 yards upstream that appeared to be cliffed out with nowhere to go about 60 feet above the river.  But never under estimate a bighorn.  He made an incredible side ways leap to escape after spending his night in an alcove pondering his choices and his fate.  It's hard to believe that 60 years ago all of what you see in that video was slated to be drowned and hidden forever under water by a dam!
