Badlands National Park Officials Considering Bison For South Unit

Officials from Badlands National Park in South Dakota are hosting open houses this week to consider a proposal to release bison on the South Unit of the national park.

The South Unit consists of approximately 133,300 acres of land located entirely within the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, home of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. 


In June 2012, after six years of public meetings on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, in Rapid City, Denver, Colorado, and Washington, DC., a new General Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement for the South Unit was finalized. Now that the 2012 GMP is in effect, a variety of development and management issues in the South Unit can be addressed, including reintroduction of bison.

There will be an open house to discuss the bison proposal on Friday morning from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Brother Rene Hall in Oglala. A second meeting will be held Friday evening at the Alex Johnson Hotel in Rapid City from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
