Authorities continued their investigation Sunday into a shooting at a Yellowstone National Park campground that claimed the life of a 3-year-old Idaho girl.
The toddler's mother told park dispatchers late Saturday morning that her daughter had shot herself with a handgun at their campsite in the Grant Village Campground south of Lake. Park rangers and medical personnel responded, but were unsuccessful in their efforts to save the child.
Few details of the incident, such as whose handgun it was and how the girl got it, were being released.
Yellowstone officials said the family's name was being withheld until sometime Monday at the family's request.
Park visitors have been allowed to carry firearms in national parks since February 2010 under an amendment U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Oklahoma, attached to credit card legislation. Under that rule change, park visitors may take guns into parks as long as they are licensed to carry them in the state in which the park is located.
