Looking for an affordable way to learn more about North Cascades National Park and hone some skills at the same time? Consider attending the Base Camp program offered by the North Cascades Institute.

This overnight program lets you stay at the North Cascades Environmental Learning Center on Diablo Lake and participate in the institute's programs.

“We’ve established our credentials as knowledgeable experts of the North Cascades by teaching people about this landscape for more than 24 years,” said Saul Weisberg, the institute's executive director. “We’re excited about the new Base Camp program because it provides folks with a flexible, fun and enriching way to experience these mountains up close.”

Base Camp is open from June 14 to August 20, 2010 and requires advanced registration by calling 360-854-2599. Prices vary according to group size and room selection. Base Camp registrants enjoy overnight accommodations in the Institute’s comfortable lodges, three meals and admission to daily learning adventures on the natural and cultural history of the North Cascades. Learning adventures will be offered three times every day and activities will vary. Options might include guided hikes on nearby trails, canoeing on Diablo Lake, natural history instruction, games, art activities, campfires, outdoor recreation, wilderness skills and more.

“We’ve heard from lots of people who say they want to visit and experience North Cascades National Park but don’t quite know how to go about it,” said Mr. Weisberg. “We invite people to join us at Base Camp this summer and let the institute open the door to an unforgettable vacation in these awe-inspiring mountains.”

Rates: $95 for the first person, $50 for the second person and $25 each for the next two people sharing one room. In other words, a group of four sharing a room costs $195 a night, or less than $50 a person – program, lodging and meals all included! Individual, shared-room registration is $95 per person. Individual, private room registration is $125 per person.

North Cascades Institute was established in 1986 and its mission is to conserve and restore Northwest environments through education. In partnership with North Cascades National Park and Seattle City Light, it operates a Learning Center at Diablo Lake and provides programs for people of all ages.
