Montana OKs Larger Bison Hunt

Share

The bullseye just got bigger on Yellowstone's bison herd.
Montana officials have decided more bison that wander out of the park and into their state should be killed in the name of domestic livestock. The Montana, Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission has voted to nearly triple -- to 140 -- the number of bison licenses it will issue this coming winter.
The reason bison are so feared in Montana is that they might carry brucellosis, a disease that can cause cattle to abort their fetuses. Now, the irony of this is that cattle introduced brucellosis to bison many, many, many decades ago.
Anyway, Montana's cattle industry currently is rated brucellosis-free. And state officials don't want to jeopardize that.
On the other side of the fence, bison advocates say Montana officials are inviting a public relations nightmare with their decision.
